The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
